Eight Athletes Who Train in Aspen Prep for Sochi Paralympics

Eight athletes who train with the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club's adaptive program will compete at the Sochi Paralympics. The Games get underway on Friday.

Eight athletes who train in Aspen arrived in Sochi this week for the Paralympics. The Games’ opening ceremony kicks off Friday in Sochi and will be broadcast in Colorado on NBC Saturday morning. Carbondale resident Kevin Jardine coaches the Aspen athletes and works for the U.S. Olympic Committee. He told Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen being in Sochi is exciting.

Ski Co Hosts Month-long Skier Safety Effort

If you’ve skied one of the four Aspen Skiing Company’s mountains, you’ve probably seen the common safety warnings. Signs range from “slow” to “no straightlining.” Now, Ski Co is part of a month-long effort by the National Ski Areas Association to drill that message home. 

 

When you get off the Elk Camp Gondola at Snowmass, there’s a tent with tantalizing free cider, stickers and Clif bars… that is if you can first pass a quiz about safety.  Tackling that issue  on the slopes is a multifaceted affair. Level one is, well, skiing more slowly.

New Fire Mitigator for Pitkin County

Later today, (Wed 6-25-2013) the Pitkin County Board of Commissioners will meet its new fire mitigation manager, Jerry Peetz. The position is the county’s latest move to ensure citizens are prepared should a wildfire occur. Aspen Public Radio’s Rebecca Kruth reports.

People tend to wait to mitigate when the danger of wildfires is already high.  So says Joe DiSalvo. Sheriff of Pitkin County.
