  The United Methodist Church is in a heated internal debate over the issue of gay marriage.  At the center of this conflict is the Methodist Book Of Discipline which guides the denomination’s practices and beliefs.

“I fear that this will lead to a splintering or a split of the church before it gets changed in the actual discipline.”

Rev. Frank Schaefer is at the center of this debate.  He spoke in Aspen on Friday (3-21-2014.) APR's Roger Adams reports.

Aspen Mayor To Wear Shirt Protesting Russia's Anti-Gay Law

A Carbondale artist came up with this design for a t-shirt he's working to get Olympians to wear. It's meant to protest Russia's anti-gay laws.

Aspen’s mayor and other city council members will be sporting a rainbow at Wednesday's Olympic send-off celebration. The mayor agreed this week to wear a t-shirt protesting Russia’s anti-gay law. As Marci Krivonen reports, a Carbondale artist designed the shirt.

At Monday’s City Council meeting, Carbondale artist Brad Reed Nelson spoke up during the citizen comment period.

"I’ve started a program called Straighten Out the Rainbow and it’s a program to bring attention to what’s going on in Russia with the anti-gay laws."

Same-Sex Couples Share Vows, Love in Civil Union Ceremony

“You are the love of my life… you are my very best friend…”

The vows were simple but very sincere for the three couples who exchanged them at the Limelight Hotel on Saturday morning.

With the approval of Civil Unions in Colorado last spring, this was a first opportunity for some same-sex couples attending Aspen Gay Ski Week to be united under the law with many of the benefits of marriage in front of a supportive community.
