Glenwood Conference: Fire Officials Look At "True Costs" Of Wildfire

The West Fork Fire Complex burned over 100,000 acres near Creede, Colorado last summer. The wildfire didn't burn homes but drove away tourism business.

The story of wildfire in the west is increasingly bleak. Fires are bigger, the wildfire season’s longer, and homes are increasingly built on lands at risk to fire. That’s the situation surrounding a wildfire conference in Glenwood Springs this week. Firefighters, elected officials and government workers met to try and find solutions. As Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen reports, one idea is to expand biomass production.

Aspen's First Retail Marijuana Store Prepares to Open

Silverpeak Apothecary will be Aspen's first retail marijuana store when it opens later this month.

Aspen’s first retail marijuana shop plans to open this month. Silverpeak Apothecary has been working on getting approvals from the City and Pitkin County. The business currently operates as a medical marijuana dispensary but, it’s tripling in size to meet the needs of a budding industry. Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen reports.

Silverpeak employee Zoe Higgins chats with a curious caller behind the counter at Silverpeak Apothecary.

"Good morning, what can we do for you? No, we’re not recreational yet. We’re hoping for early to mid-March," she says to the caller.

The vows were simple but very sincere for the three couples who exchanged them at the Limelight Hotel on Saturday morning.

With the approval of Civil Unions in Colorado last spring, this was a first opportunity for some same-sex couples attending Aspen Gay Ski Week to be united under the law with many of the benefits of marriage in front of a supportive community.

Denver Post Hires Marijuana Editor, Launches Pot Website

Colorado made history on January 1st as more than three dozen retail pot stores opened across the state. The Denver Post has hired a Marijuana Editor and launched a new website to track this new industry.

Across the state, more than three dozen retail marijuana stores opened for business  on January 1st, marking a historic milestone for pot advocates. News reports showed lines outside of some Denver-area stores. And, people from around the country traveled to the state to purchase pot. In the Roaring Fork Valley, retail marijuana shops are expected to open later this year.
