With the clearing of the crash wreckage from the runway last night, the Aspen Airport saw travelers arriving by car and bus to find the best ways out of the town this morning.
By 6am several dozen travelers had arrived at the United Airlines counter to get tickets re-routed following a 36 hour closure of the airport. Travelers were offered various solutions including flights out of Aspen or bus service to Denver to meet connecting flights.
Even though the airport has reopened, counter help at United said concerns about weather conditions – chiefly, high winds – could hamper some flight out of Aspen this morning and afternoon.
United flight 5524 to Denver at 9:33am is expected to be the first flight out since Sunday afternoon’s crash of a private jet from Mexico via Tucson that killed one and injured two.
The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to continue its investigation into the crash of N115WF, a 1994 Canadair Challenger twin-engine business jet. A preliminary report could be released later this month with a final report expected in 12 to 18 months.
