Over the Top in Sochi

EDITOR’S NOTE: We are very excited to share the travels of Simi Hamilton’s family to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing dispatches from Ruthie Brown and family as they give you a first-hand, “behind-the-scenes” look at the Olympics.

Just when we thought we were getting the hang of the Russian transportation system, we managed to miss our train (this was after running through the crowded sidewalk and streets).  We were glad to arrive at the Rosa Katur venue (high in the mountains — a two hour train ride and gondola ride combination). We walked into the security ticket scanners at the high mountain venue, which promptly beeped a red red X... Looking at the tickets, the security guards informed us that our tickets were for the event the following day. We hysterically started laughing at the entire situation in which we had just placed ourselves, and the guards appreciated the fact that we were laughing. Feeling sorry for us, they gave us tickets to the even for today: Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle. We watched history in the making as Sage Kotsenburg won the first gold medal for the U.S. of the games, as well as the first gold in Snowboard Slope Style as a sport in the Olympics. Tomorrow we will see the Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle (which we are now positive we have tickets for!). Thanks to Andy and Suzie Karlinski — we wish we were watching with the Karlinski family!

Evening of walking of the Olympic Village...over the TOP. There are no words to sum up the vision. Putin, Disneyland, Dubai, or a world class event.

The Proctor and Gamble House has graciously set up a House for Families as a safe place to gather.
