Don Voltmer

Host - Jazz from Aspen

"In Memoriam" of Don “The Jazzman” Voltmer who passed away in February 2014 at the age of 78.

################

The Jazztime with Don show – Thursday, once a month from 8-11pm.

Don fell in love with jazz at the age of twelve listening to Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. He was born in Detroit, graduated from Michigan State University, spent 4 years in Cleveland with IBM, and moved to Aspen from Denver in 1972 to escape big city life.

He began filling in on Thursdays (usually the last Thursday of the month), for Stu Huck in February 1998. He likes to feature classic jazz musicians like Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Woody Herman, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Oscar Peterson, Frank Sinatra, Dave Brubeck, etc. Don usually likes to pick a theme for his shows such as “Live Jazz is the Best Jazz”, “Swingin’ the Blues” and “Great Carnegie Hall Concerts”. He also likes to share the microphone with guest DJs. Among his guests have been Hal Thau, Bunny Harrison, Michael Dawkins, Don Fleisher, John Sarpa, Mary & Bob Noone, and Bill Cathers. Don also likes to encourage his listeners to call in by asking them to identify a particular musician or a certain song. Don hosts the Jazz Wiz of Aspen Public Radio contest with past winners including Bill Lipman, Mary Noone, Eve Booth and Bert Devers.

Don says, “I have a great time for the three hours I get to play my kind of jazz, and I hope it shows. Many thanks to all our listeners who have become members of Aspen Public Radio with each fund drive!”

Don sends out an e-mail, that tells his jazz fans of the artists and songs he’ll be playing during his next show, to those on his Jazz Lover’s List roughly 5-7 days before his monthly show. To be added to this list you can e-mail Don at dvoltmer@yahoo.com
