Road to Sochi: Documentary Highlights Dangers of Extreme Sports

A new documentary called The Crash Reel opened in theaters in December. It details the crash and recovery of pro snowboarder and 2010 Olympic hopeful Kevin Pearce.

As the Olympic Games get closer, the competitions are heating up. The Aspen-area athletes competing in ski racing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, snowboarding and freeskiing will find out soon whether they’ve made Team USA. Some local athletes compete in the halfpipe like snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler and freeskiers Torin Yater-Wallace and Alex Ferriera. Skiing Halfpipe is a new discipline at the upcoming Olympics. Just like many competitions, this event can be dangerous and even fatal. A new documentary features 2010 Olympic hopeful Kevin Pearce who crashed during training and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen reports.

DEVELOPING: Investigating the Plane Crash at the Aspen Airport

3:53pm - Courtney Liedler of the NTSB says as of 3pm her team has not been able to get onto the aircraft to start the interior investigation. But, the Federal officials say man, machine and mother nature are the key aspects they will be investigating related to the crash. She says the final report will take 12-18 months to complete, but a preliminary report should be released about 5-7 days after the NTSB team leaves Aspen.

Non-Profit in the Spotlight: Aspen Youth Center, Part 1

The Aspen Youth Center is a big part of childhood in Aspen, almost every child in the Aspen School District, dating as far back as the 1980's, has had some encounter with the youth center. Longtime board-member and Aspen local, Sue Smedstad, shares the history of the youth center and the different forms the center has taken since it was first conceptualized in the 1960's. Aspen Youth Center Executive Director, Keith Berglund, also joins.
