Survey Says: Life’s Pretty Good in Pitkin County, But With Some Worries

Residents of Pitkin County have given a thumbs-up for county government and services. That’s according to a survey done by a private firm, which presented its findings to Pitkin County Commissioners on Tuesday, March 11th. The survey had residents fill out a questionnaire. It covered a wide variety of topics. And despite overall satisfaction, residents say there are some issues they are concerned about.

Military Veteran Says Skiing Helped Him "Get His Life Back"

Chris Devlin-Young ski races in a mono-ski. He trains in Aspen and at age 52, he's one of the older competitors at the Paralympics in Sochi, Russia.

At 52 years old, Chris Devlin-Young is one of the oldest alpine skiers competing in the Paralympics. A military plane crash years ago paralyzed the part-time Aspen resident from the knees down. Now, he competes in monoskiing and has four Paralympic medals to his name. This year, he’s hoping to add to that medal count. Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen reports.

Aspen Has “Unusual” Culture of Not Paying Overtime

    "In Aspen, almost no employer was in compliance." Those are the words of Amy Debisschop, Assistant District Director at the US Department of Labor office in Denver, and she's referring to restaurants in the upper Roaring Fork Valley. Debisschop supervises agency investigators who reviewed the books of the Aspen Skiing Company, restaurants, and other businesses.

Non-Profit in the Spotlight

Non-Profit in the Spotlight: True Media Foundation, Part 2

The True Media Foundation's mission is to teach teenagers how to make video media with positive social messaging. High school students from Basalt to Silt can sign-up for the Foundation's  after-school program, BeHeard! where they learn how to work with cameras and audio equipment. Students also learn how to plan, write and organize their own documentary films, focused on topics of interest in the Roaring Fork Valley.
